Well.. DHCP is Windows NT Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, without a DHCP server running on an NT I don't know how this is working. Or, do you have an NT on your network?

It can't without a DHCP server.

Is there a protocol running on the two that see eachother (other than IP) that is not running on the machine that isn't playing?

NetBEUI is the easiest to set up for a Win network that doesn't need TCP/IP.. my guess is, that is how the two that are working are hooking up!
