John, with a special mode,, the best throughput you're going to see between a pair of standard V.90 modems is 33.6K. V.90, like X2 and Kflex, is an assymetrical protocol that requires specialized hardware that transmits at the 56K rate; standard V.90 modems uplink at up to 33.6K, and downlink at up to 56K. With standard V.90 modems, neither is capable of sending at 56K, so the best throughput ends up being no better than 33.6K bidirectionally. if you check, ISPs and the like have different modems that are capable of uplink at 56Kbps rates; in most cases, these ISP modems require a synchronous connection to the serial device, and are not designed to switch their operating mode.
