In addition to the previous messages, you can use GetFldState() to determine if a record is new or not. Also, you could put the code to update the hidden variable in your SAVE button (or method) instead of in a Valid(), InteractiveChange() or LostFocus(). This way it would be updated even if the visible field was not updated.
