It's hard to say, because we all have different problems and goals. What you really need is to be sure from a "theoretical" approach that you have the right design. If in doubt, be sure to fully understand the basic rules for integrity. There's a document on my web that you might want to download. It's about a case tool, named xCase. The document does not sell you the product, it's rather an explanation of the rules to follow.

Another approach is learn what other's are doing. I'm writing a payroll software right now. I could send you my analysis of the project. It's about 60 pages now, but be warned, it's in French.
