Jim, I agree with your "extension of the language" case (wrote a "first of the month" function just a few days ago), and would like to suggest another. In my reservation system I pre-build dummy reservation records for every possible combination of calendar weeks and available units. I have a stand-alone program which will search the reservation file for any missing combinations and create them as needed. Thus when a new year is added or new units are added, this must be run afterwards. On my calendar screen and my units screen there is a button labeled "create dummy res". The button simply calls the batch routine.

I'm not excluding MKDUMRES.PRG from the EXE but I don't think that effects the argument.
