The ones I've used (the ATI Virtual Desktop and Diamond InControl Tools) work by moving the mouse out of the screen boundaries, or by changing focus to a control or Window outside the currently visible Desktop. The Diamond implementation is better IMO. Matrox also has drivers with this capability, but I've never used it there.
