I wouldn't discard the "L2" cache aspect. I installed NT Server several times with that BIOS option ON and the thing would install perfectly but then running pretty much anything would crash it. Could be the same thing with NT Workstation. Try disabling the external cache so that the BIOS startup screen reports "WriteBack"
