I had the same problem on 2 HP672C printers and 1 HP500 (old) with
FPW26 and different computers and operating systems (W95/W98).
On 2 of them, after reinstalling the operating systems,
reinstalling my app, and then reinstalling the print driver, the system still didn't work, but left alone for a few days, it started working!
When it happened on the 3rd one, it didn't want to repair itself.
I hooked up an Epson Stylus Color, but still residual lock up.
Of course, HP wants EcP port, IEEE cable and DMA3 for the printer
settings. However, when I changed the port to EPP (not EPP/ECP)
things started working again and now things seem fine, but I'm still
using 1 HP500 and 1 HP672C and feel like I'm sitting on a time bomb.
I spent over 2 hours on the phone to HP the last time but they
insisted, after many tests, reinstalling different print driver, etc,
that it wasn't the printer. Somehow, I'm not convinced.
Hope this might help.
