Just to add to the right stuff the others have already said, there's a way out: define views into your FPD tables, and keep them in a .DBC, and make them whatever you like (updatable, read-only, parametrized...).

I've got couple of apps which already work like that, and I simply take my pick where do I do the data entry today - from FPD or VFP. They both use the same FPD tables.
