IBM came out with PCDOS because it isn't a Microsoft-derived DOS; it's actually derived from DRDOS, which started life at Digital Research, and moved from there. It's not the same thing or equivalent to DOS 6.22, and there are serious issues with how it handles partition tables and with real-mode driver compatibility with MSDOS-designed drivers. It is not an 'upgrade' to MS-DOS.
