The shape is not placed IN the grid but OVER the grid. Just make a rectangle with the Width of the grid and the height of the rowheight. If you set the drawmode to 13 the contents of the grid is shining through the shape. In this way it looks like you've a selection bar (like in a list) but it in fact only a shape on top of the grid.
To calculate the position of the shape you've to use the headerheight, left, top, and rowheight properties of the grid.
I know there is an example of this on the site of David Frankenback (I don't know the adress right now, but you can find it in each of his messages here on UT).
