Probably a hard error (bad sector) on the second partition (probably your Extended drive partition) or an error in the partition table itself. I'd run CHKDSK with the /R cmmand line option against each of your logical drives on the first physical hard drive.

Something dropped transport for a VPN (a private networking arrangement, frequently used to establish a secured WAN using PPTP). Problem could be in any of a number of places. Reestablish the network connection.
