There's nothing that would make it incompatible; there are a number of printers, notably, some of the Brother laser printers, that get extrememly confused by ECP; preferring an EPP configuration instead.

EPP or standard AT bidirectional ports don't use the DMA chnnel, and are better understood by older drivers. In addition, they can function by polling (repeatedly querying the I/O port rather than relying on interrupt-driven I/O; it imposes a heavier load on the CPU, but it works. With a port type other than ECP, Win9x will fall back to using polled I/O.

There's a problem with the remote printer protocol; I'd update and then reinstall File and Printer Sharing if the problem isn't cured by the upgrade alone.
