The record counter is located in bytes 4 - 7 of the data file header.
If you have VFP, look in help under File Structures for more information.
Remember that it's in hex, reverse notation (in other words, byte 4 is populated first, then byte 5, and so on -- you may have to play with the values to get what you want). Make sure you experiment on a *COPY* of the table.
