I found that an index had been added to the table.
Originally there were a bunch of tags, among them one called IDBASE expression IDBASE. This is the primary key.
The added tag had as an expression IDBASE + dtoc(DATAOP). Don't remember the name but had nothing to do with the others. Removing this tag solved all the problems.

Now, is it possible that VFP gets so easily confused? I had reindexed the table (using SDT) before and after the change so I can rule out an indexing problem.
