We have several apps that reside on a server and would like to prevent having the *.esl file on each pc or having it several times on the server. We tried putting its location in the PATH statement in the autoexec.bat file but didn't have any luck.

You want it in one place. Under FP2.x, every Fox app loaded it's own copy of the runtime. Beginning with VFP, the runtime became reentrant, meaning that only one copy is loaded. Thus, the centralized location so that it can be found.
