Hi Ken,
Why would you not use SUBSTRING? It's very simple as is.
You may be confused with lower-level languages such as C, or I think even Delphi or Visual Basic, where strings can be manipulated as arrays.

It was along the line of MyString<3> or something, for example, to get the third character - (and no, I'm not confusing array functions).
