I do something like that in an app but I don't have the code here at the office.
But I use a memofields in a table called Letters as a template for letters in an old FP 2.6 app.

I believe I just use a REPLACE command: REPLACE ALL "memofield name" WITH '\xx\' FOR "memofieldname" = '\bg\'

Of course I'd do a test first.
