The Mabry email control (mabry.com) does this quite well, and works well with VFP. We have it running on a small app which also handles the replies.

You need to think about a separate mailbox to handle automated replies, as you will want to delete mail that you have processed, and it will require some careful planning to distinguish between what you can process and what you can't.
