He stated that many errors that used to cause GPF were now 'caught' by VFP and translated into a normal error message. I have yet to see an error message likethe one that Calvin demonstrated with his SYS() function that caused a GPF. Instead, we are seeing C0000005. A good effort gone bad.

>It is a bad thing for MS popularity as well, giving all of these errors one hideous name and hiding the cause from users- it makes it look like there is one big flaw with VFP 6 and its name is C0000005 ("why can't they just fix the bad part of the program?"), when in fact this is not the case.

Hi Erik,

My take on this particular aspect (ActiveX related C...5 errors) is that it may not be VFP that's either the cause or the fix. It may be that the control is "throwing" the exception, and VFP, unfortunately, is "catching" it. Or it may a combination of VFP and the control. I don't know. One thing that I've noted (and reported here before) is that VFP 6.0 seems much better behaved overall with ActiveX controls.

As long as these sorts of things don't occur in production, I'm willing to live with them. Afterall, if it's something that I do that I can change, then I can live with it. However, as I said to Barbara, I wish that there was a more descriptive reporting of this error.

Regards,
George
