When I use it for indexing or SQL's, I simply have a status bar on my form which continues to move. It cannot show how long a task is going to take, only that some processing is being done.

So, we can force the mousepointer to be an hourglass, we can update the status bar to show work in progress, and we could display a message every once in a while to tell the user that something is happening.
