hi,

we have an .app that uses a DDE call to another package (Street Wizard) to get back routing information. it worked fine in vfp5 on w95 for our users (12 users p233, 32meg, 4 meg drives, novell net). we are using promatrix as a framework.

when vfp6 came out, we halted changing the .app, and started porting to vfp6 and promatrix 6. on our development machines we had no problem. the 1st users machine we put it on the DDEInit wouldnt work. it was being called in an add form a couple of 'levels' deep.

we built a little bitty .exe to do the DDEInit and it worked, after putzing around some more we finally moved the DDEInit to a very early part of the .app and it got happy. great...or not so.

so we put it on 2 more machines. it works on 1, not on the other.

the DDEInit will actually 'call' and 'load' the StreetWizard (if SW isnt already up, it will be loaded and placed on the desktop), but the handle value is always a -1 (no go). we added an DDELastError just after the DDEInit, it returns a 10, meaning the DDEInit didnt work (altho again, it does load the program).

all of these machines are virtually identical. same vendor, same hardware, same software (mostly). the 2 we added to later both had AOL on them, but it works on 1, not the other.

we got the idea it was a 'resource' problem from somewhere. maybe w98 was more efficient. so i just put w98 on the one that didnt work.

well, we know why i am writing.

anyone have any good ideas about what may be going on? then any ideas on how to fix it.
