I think I remember a message on the UT referencing performance problems with SET DELETED and Novell 3.12. Had something to do with serializing access to tables, I think. I can't seem to find the post - search doesn't seem to be working - but I think it was within the last 6 months or so. Maybe the problem carried over to 4.x?
