I use an Okidata 6e laser and 320 dot matrix. I rarely use the driver for the dot matrix, but both have been working fine. If the problem is really with the driver, you should be able to load the driver on your machine and get the same results regardless of the actual hardware present. I'm sure you've checked, but make sure they don't have an HP printer set as default! Good Luck.
