I agree. I have an option to make a merge data file (I do it in WP) for generic letters. This way the user can select the clients that require the letter and the system will produce the merge data file with the neccessary information; but for letters that are going to be produced again and again, the users have options to pick the letter and the code does everything. No merging required.
