This won't make you any happier, I think, but I'm going to say it makes sense for VFP to behave this way. An error window is a modal window. This makes sense because if you have an error, you ought to have to deal with it before doing anything else. And since two modal windows can't exist at once (that's part of the definition of modal, two things can't be the "only active thing"), your modal form has to stop being modal to allow the modal error dialog to appear.
Please, never be ashamed of a mistake you made, even if it seems to you like a stupid one. We've all made mistakes we think are stupid once we know the solution. People here are not going to judge whether what you did was silly. They just try to help with every question asked.
