We use notes where I work. And honestly I'm not a huge fan, but scalability and ease of maintenance was the reason it was chosen. We run notes on an multiple AS400 and our working with IBM testing a version that runs on MVS. I believe outlook is easier to work with, but doesn't scale well and can become difficult to administer in an organization with 1000's of users.
Integrating the notes client is a bit tougher, and it is a huge hog, we use IDS mail to integrate email with the application...one thing I dislike about notes is the email client is specific to each machine, you just can't go to some one elses machine and login and expect to see your email, it don't work that way !
The groupware functions of notes 5.0 are much better, and it is html based.
I have wrestled with notes on more than one occasion while integrating it into fox and vb apps, and is a logical upgrade for cc:mail users.
