Part of the reason, as I understand it, is the ease of maintenance when compared to our current email server, ccMail 6.0. What I'd like to know is the pros and cons of this. Also any and all information on alternatives, Outlook, Exchange, or other MAPI compliant servers.

Hi George,
We use Exchange server along with Outlook here. I've written several applications in both VFP and VB that use the MAPI ActiveX controls and also manipulate mail items ( including mail, calendars, tasks, etc. ) thru OLE automation of Outlook. Works pretty well. The biggest bugaboo for me has been trying to write applications directly inside Outlook using VB Script. Not a real lot of fun. :-) Exchange server administrator here really likes it. We used MSMail before this.
