Have you tried recycling the deleted records? Or, if they are temporary, packing them as Joseph suggested? Also, check that you have all the indexes you need if you are doing SELECTs. Check to see whether they are all fully optimized. Remember you will need indexes on deleted() if you have Set Deleted OFF.
