After checking the code in this method, it occurs to me that the table structure may be slightly out of whack. This routine reads the header of the DBF, gathering field information until it hits the "end of field area" flag. However, if this flag is missing, it happily keep reading your entire table as one big field list, so I can see it erroring out eventually.
