I'd go along with that - and it's an easier transition to the API for most VFPers as well, since virtually everything else is aimed squarely at the C/C++ marketplace.
I'd recommend an MSDN subscription as well if you need a very complete API reference. If you purchase Visual Studio, the full 3 CD set is included, but it doesn't get you the quarterly updates; the information can be accessed from MSDN OnLine as well, but it's nowhere near as convenient to use that way.
