You might want to try
ATI's Web site - I know a couple of people who've had problems with the initial drivers released under Win98 for some early cards based on the Rage chipset, who've since reported good results with the current drivers.
You might try changing the color depth (the number of colors per pixel) to 256 color mode temporarily to see if the lockups disappear; I know at least one person who had trouble with either HighColor (16 bit) or TrueCOlor (24 and 32 bit) color depth with the Rage card that Gateway shipped 12-18 months ago, but the card worked fine at 8 bit color depth. The new drivers help him.
