>I build speakers in my spare time, but I'm a hopeless idiot when it comes to woodworking. I hire someone to do the cabinentmaking and veneering for me - I trust myself with screwdrivers and soldering irons, but not with hammers and saws. I'd be really scared if I hired a carpenter to build a cabinent for me and the only tool he showed up with was a 6lb sledgehammer...

Within your metaphor your implied conclusion makes sense ... the master carpenter with only a sledgehammer should be run from, screaming.

But as a programmer, if I limit myself to one language, I'm more limiting the applications I can write well than doing a disservice to my clients. If I'm a VFP expert and only offer myself as a great designer/builder of medium/large database applications, I'm not lying to anyone. I'm just not allowing myself to honestly market myself as a great writer of, e.g., robotic controls, video drivers, poker games, or word processors. (Or small cute database apps which might be more suited to Access. ;)

That said, I'm currently teaching myself both VB and Access (VB with the help of local community college class). But it will be a year or two of developing real world applications with those tools (between or concurrent with VFP work) before I can honestly market myself as moderate to expert skill with them.

Cheers,
Rich.
