A study in to the relative costs and time schedule of updating software has shown that if you change more than a certain percentage of your base code, I think it's 10% but I'd have to look it upagain to be certain, you save both money and time by rewriting the software rather than amending it.
Perhaps you should approach the upgrade with this in mind as problems like the one you describe are legion in converting a complex project from 2.x to VFP6. So much has changed between these two versions that there isn't really a simple way to convert.
