Fast Find coninuously scans and indexes the content of your hard drive, making certain types of searches, especially in the Open dialogs of some MS Office products, run significantly faster when document content searches are requested.

Fast Find eats a significant amount of CPU resources - perhaps as much as screen savers that use OpenGL, like OpenGL Pipes, or the more complex animations in some of the Win98 screen savers.

Fast Find is not a necessary component of Office; if you find that you're having problems, you can either disable it from Control Panel (there's a COntrol Panel applet loaded at the same time as FastFind, that can control the scope and frequency of its searches, as well as shuitting it down entirely, or you can remove the shortcut to it from the start menu. I'd recommend trying to use the Control Panel applet first, and if that doesn't work for you, uninstall it or remove the entry that restarts it on your system.
