Since noone else has found anything specific on it, what is the specific application you're trying to address? There are algorithms that might fit this generic description involved in both UPC and VIN number check digit computation which do not match algorithmically. You might try searching Web resources; Metacrawler turned up a number of web pages describing algorithms for computing various modulo-based methods which varied in their intermediate computation mechanism.
