The GDI is the Graphic Device Interface for Windows, the thing that talks to video and printer drivers. The first thing to do is to check compatibility - in the case of video drivers, if necessary, switch to the standard vga driver to see if the problem goes away; for printers (especially HPs with HP-written drivers) try using a driver from an operating system distribution for an older compatible printer.
