I've been going round and round with colors and backgrounds for some time. I finally gave up on it. One particular Dell machine had a problem with the graphics turning fuzzy. I had another Dell, later model, and switched the video cards - all worked well after that. Funny thing is, it worked well on both machines. When I switched them back - my problem returned to just the one machine... same as before.
