As I pointed out in my post to your parallel thread [g] you're hosed here. If the user clicks the close box of the browse, LASTKEY() is not updated by that action, it remains whatever LASTKEY() was before they clicked the close box.

Since you're using 2.x-ish things anyway, unless you've got a huge number of records to choose from, I'd try DEFINE POPUP to select the record. Did you ever do that in 2.x? (You're a FoxPro-er from way back as I remember, right?)
