Well, turns out Error 1796 in this instance means;
VFP has totally trashed your .FRX for the specified report format."
I found this out by opening and attempting to browse the .FRX when I could not modify the report format because error 1796 kept throwing me out of the report designer. The source of the problem was actually the report form entry in the project table -- but I do not yet know precisely what about the entry caused the .FRX to destroy itself.
