>Hi, just wondering if anyone has managed to create web pages that access VFP data for the Apache web server on Linux? If so, how? The closest I've managed is to use "cgi", "c" and Sequiter's "codebase" routines. Is there a simpler way? Before answering, please remember I am looking for a Linux solution and NOT for Microsoft NT etc...
Do you absolutely require access to VFP databases? If this is not in your requirements directly, I would suggest you take a serious look at
MySQL server, Oracle 8 (Commercial and available for Linux now), or Sybase available download from
Red Hat Software.
If I were choosing best cost/performance, MySQL would nail all of the above hands down. It is about $200.00 USD for commercial (non-personal use) and runs circles around Microsoft SQL server on similarly equipped hardware.
You could access MySQL server with ODBC in VFP or VB or VC++ clients to plug data into it from VFP tables if you really need the information to flow from there.
Otherwise, I would recommend hiring somebody with Perl programming or PHP3 (
www.php3.com/net) skills. There are quite a few impressive web sites that are driven by Linux and MySQL.
Slashdot.org and
Freshmeat.net are prime examples of MySQL and Perl (programming language used for CGI scripting, etc.).
