First,

Try replacing the SELECT INTO with an explicit CREATE. Fill the temp table with and INSERT SELECT (see BOL for the syntax). Hopefully that will stop your deadlock problem (it did mine).

You can use DBCC SHRINKFILE to shrink your log file. You might try truncating the log first.
