Thanks for the info. I finally found KnowledgeBase article Q137809 on MSDN about this:

Although 3.0b helps, it has a limit of 768 MB. The problem was fixed in 5.0b. I've been trying to convince the dept. to move to 6.0 anyway, so maybe this will help, in an ironic way.
