When I press the Verify button in the Expression Builder of the control, I get the lovely "help" message: Syntax error. If there is a syntax error, why does it run in the command window???

John,
Might it be you use expression builder ? SQL should be there as a string. Just paste the SQL to recordsource or put it in quotes.
="Select ...."
select ...
