MICR printing problem in SBT

We have a consulting firm (started before I got here) modification to SBT which allows us to print a full MICR-encoded check. Even though I had to tweak character positions on the MICR line, it was working fine until recently. Our original bank, CoreStates, is now First Union, who gave us a much longer bank acct number. As a result, I found out our original consultant-supplied MICR font is not to full ANSI specs. That is, it's giving us 7 CPI, instead the needed 8 CPI, so the MICR line encroaches on the area where the bank prints the check amount for verification.
While I have found an E13-B compliant font, the form for the checks is no longer printing correctly. While the check preview looks fine, characters are missing from the right-hand side when printing. What the...??? I've lengthened the fields to the full width of the check, to no avail. There is nothing in the SBT software that limits the memvar size.

Any suggestions? I'm at a loss on this one.
