An (over?) aggressive marketing campaign without the service to back it up wihich gave the CIS "Dial 1-800-NOT BUSY" advert right in the middle of Superbowl prime time!
Apart from that, AOL also stands for A**holes Online in many circles.
For years at serious SF conventions they had "@" parties where people on the web got together - mainly scientists/researchers - and they had a ruling that @AOL.com did not count as they were all bozons.
