I had the same problem on a Novell network a couple of years ago.
From your message I can't make out the OS but if its Novell, there are some commands you can place in the startup files from the server (don't know the exact syntax anymore but was something like SET MAX_RECORD_LOCKS_PER_STATION
and some other SET commands).
If you need the exact syntax I can look them up !
