Thanks for the suggestions, but no luck. However, by process of elimination I was able to determine which record in the .SCX was causing the problem. Within that record (for a textbox), in the PROPERTIES field, there was an entry for "Comment" consisting only of a carriage return (how it got there I'll never know). I deleted that, and evertyhing was hunky-dory. Sheesh, VFP is sensitive.
