You still have to USE DBF('cursorname') AGAIN IN 0. Before NOFILTER we used to use all kinds of tricks to force VFP to create a temp file instead of using the table again. Once you did that, if you used the cursor's DBF in another work area it would be read/write. Of course, the whole idea of NOFILTER was to allow you to do this very thing. For some reason, though, VFP still doesn't make it read only. Not a big deal once you know how to do it, but it's certainly not obvious (I know I didn't figure it out myself).
