>>The problem is that with some e-mail programs, the first e-mail that you receive is automatically opened. I could just see people never checking for e-mail until they get a virus program that checks for this macro virus. Also, the fact is that someone could send you an e-mail titled "Anything you want to call it" and attach the infected Word document and if you open the Word document, you are in trouble. So I think people need to be aware that it is the attachment and the opening of the attachment that will cause problems.

>Well, I partially agree. I think it's best to have users looking at message subject titles for "Important Message From..." first. Then the title of the infected doc should be listed prominently too, as you mention, in case they miss the message title...

>In the past, attempts to educate users on how viruses are spread (such as email vs. attachments) hasn't worked too well, I think, so our LAN just tries to stop users from even opening the message, focusing on that...

I am not commenting on your policies. I was really commenting so other people here (typically programmers (ie. more advanced than a typical user)) understand how this works. The fact is, the Word document could have any title. The best option is to never open a Word document (or Excel, etc.) unless you've talked to the creator of that document. If someone is sending a Word document to show me text, I tell them to convert to ASCII.
